Abstract

This article explores the pivotal role of the National Library of Nigeria (NLN) in the development of library and information services across the country, especially as it marks its 60th anniversary. As Nigeria’s apex library, the National Library of Nigeria is central to national bibliographic control, legal deposit, cultural preservation, research support, digital infrastructure, literacy promotion, and international collaboration. The article highlights how the services of National Library of Nigeria contribute significantly to educational advancement, cultural identity, informed policymaking, economic development, and social empowerment. By examining its key functions and developmental impact, the study underscores the importance of strengthening NLN’s capacities to meet evolving national and global information demands. The conclusion reaffirms NLN’s enduring relevance as a custodian of knowledge, a promoter of literacy, and a vital partner in Nigeria’s pursuit of sustainable national development.
