Abstract
The National Library of Nigeria plays a crucial role in promoting literacy, education, and research in the country. However, the library’s services and functions are still largely manual, leading to inefficiencies and limitations in accessing information. This study explores the prospects and challenges of automating the National Library of Nigeria’s services and functions. The study reveals that automation can improve the efficiency, accessibility, and reliability of library services, as well as enhance the user experience. The study also identifies several challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited technical expertise, and funding constraints. The study recommends a phased approach to automation, starting with the digitization of library materials and development of a library management system. It also emphasizes the need for staff training and development, as well as collaboration with other libraries and stakeholders to share resources and expertise.
