Abstract

The library is an important institution in designing the establishment of an information policy since it has the expertise as an information provider. This paper seeks to investigate the role of public libraries in national integration. The public library should give the public equitable access to political, economic and social information using various electronic, social and print media platforms at their disposal. Such political information should include voters rights, elections schedule, among others, should be done with the intention to increase political participation and awareness. This free and equitable access to information will enable Individuals Bridge the gap in the knowledge which will enhance their political participation, economic development and invariably spurs national integration. The major challenges identified were inadequate fund, manpower,power supply, lack of e-library, among others. It is recommended that Public Libraries should strive to acquire Information resources both in print and electronic format on social, economic, political and educational development that are current and relevant to making the communities to be literate and public libraries need to be adequately supported and funded by government and none governmental agencies in the country.
