Abstract

A library in Nigeria is not just a collection of books, magazines, and newspapers, but a knowledge and information center that houses a significant portion of human civilization in recorded form. To be a functioning library, it must be specially selected, processed, and organized, making its contents easily accessible both within and outside the library. Information is a critical and strategic resource at institutional, national, regional, and global levels. To achieve economic emancipation and independence, Nigeria must focus on the development of libraries at all levels. One important element in library development is the availability of relevant books at affordable prices. However, in Nigeria, books have become scarce and expensive due to factors such as high import costs and local production costs. The government should address the issue of paper and newspaper supply and rectify the anomalous situation of nearly total dependence on foreign sources.
