THE INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL NETWORKING ON THE BEHAVIOR AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ILESA EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF OSUN STATE,NIGERIA

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to determine the influence of social networking on the behavior and academic performance of secondary school students in Ilesa East Local Government Area of Osun state, Nigeria. The study aimed to find out extent at which students are engaged on social networking site, identify the various categories of social networking that adolescents are exposed to, and ascertain the influence of social networking on students' behavior. The population for this stud comprises of one hundred students selected from five schools in Ilesa East Ioerl Government Area of Osun State, Nigeria and simple random sampling techniques were adopted in selecting the respondents for this research work. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire, chi square was used to analyze the data gathered from the respondents at 4 degree of freedom and 0.05 level of significance. The finding establishes that there is a significant relationship between social networking site and the academic performance of studerts, there is significant relationship between social networking site and the behavior of students in secondary schoo! aind that there is danger of social networking site on students. It was recommended among others that students should reduce their exposure to soc al media and pay more attention to their studies,especiaily those aspiring to record huge academic success should guide themselves against the indiscriminate use of social media, and hat government, schools and other well to do individuals should encourage hard work by rewarding successful:tudents through scholarship schemes and other incentives, parent should monitorthe usage of social media by their children.
