Abstract

Indexing and abstracting services constitute one of the medium for disseminating information and enhancing literature search. Automation increases the library's ability to achieve this objective. While some Nigerian libraries have succeeded in automating their services, the technology is generally under utilized. Major constraints to automated indexing and abstracting services are: inadequate finance, poorly developed IT infrastructure, poor technology expertise, and lack of cooperation among information scientists and librarians. Librarians need to develop a clear view of the complex issues involved and equip themselves to meet the challenges of emerging technologies.
