Abstract

Nigeria's publishing history dates back to colonial lords who started with missionary societies printing religious books and pamphlets. These books were used to impart moral lessons to the literate public and were primarily from Europe. The Nigerian public relied on European publishers for education, including subjects like English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Religion, Mathematics, Accounting, and Secretarial practice. Today, there are both native and foreign publishers in Nigeria, offering hope for a brighter future. The country now has a growing publishing industry specializing in commercial printing and book publishing, with Nigerians taking responsible positions in companies like Macmillan and Nelson Publishing Company. Their skill and expertise have significantly contributed to Nigeria's economy.
