REFERENCE SERVICE AND THE TECHNIQUES OF HANDLING LIBRARY CLIENTELE
Abstract
Reference service, as defined in the librarian's glossary, involves assisting readers in their search for information and the work of a Reference Library, which typically contains books for in-library consultation only. It encompasses the provision and organization of reference work, aiming to help users identify available resources on specific subjects and satisfy deeper subject interests. Effective reference service extends beyond library organization to understanding user information needs and employing appropriate techniques for handling diverse clientele. The Reference Department in a large library is usually staffed by a Chief Librarian, other librarians, and several reference assistants.
