Abstract

The library is a vital human endeavor, with numerous schemes and guides in place to maintain order. However, the ideal of order is often a human aspiration, and the observance of law is pre-requisite to an existing state of order. In a state of near-disorder, library objects are displaced, and clients roam around, helping themselves. Library staff are busy gossiping and pretending to provide service, but when confronted by adventurous users, they cannot account for the location of materials. Library Assistants are often unavailable at the circulation desk, leading to many pages missing and books being marked to the point of defacement. Telephone calls are answered in a hostile or reluctant tone, and there is no follow-up to quick reference enquiries. This situation can lead to users feeling disgusted and unsure of the library's overall aim of effective retrieval of stored information.
