RARE BOOK COLLECTIONS
Abstract
Rare book librarianship has little literature, with administration of rare book rooms often lacking focus. This branch of librarianship has developed arbitraryly, often through imitation rather than formal consultation. Many library courses focus on service and effective administration, neglecting custodianship. Experienced professionals in rare book libraries can provide insights into day-to-day problems and remedies. The National Library, a leading library in a developing country, is making progress in rare book collection but needs to focus on custodianship and a curator. Nigeriana rare books should be considered workable solutions for the nation.
