THE PLACE OF SCHOOL LIBRARY IN CONTINOUS ASSESSMENT IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN NIGERIA
Abstract
The Nigerian federal government recommends a continuous assessment scheme for junior secondary schools, focusing on the importance of libraries in education. The policy emphasizes the need for libraries to be established and trained in all educational institutions. Continuous assessment represents continuous awareness by teachers of their pupils' development and knowledge, and emphasizes changing teaching and learning methods in secondary schools. The school library can play a crucial role in this process, as the scope of knowledge has become too vast to be covered within classroom instruction. The end-of-year examination, which relies heavily on mechanical notes, needs to be changed to allow students to search for facts independently. This paper examines how classroom teachers and secondary school librarians can work together to achieve continuous assessment goals in secondary schools in Nigeria. The school library should actively participate in bringing about change by involving school support services, staff, and materials with students in the classroom.
