USE AND USE PATTERN OF INTERNATIONAL STANDARD BOOK NUMBER (ISBN) AND INTERNATIONAL STANDARD SERIAL NUMBER (ISSN) IN NIGERIA

Abstract

International Standard Book and Serials Numbers are unique. Not all Nigeriana bear either number correctly. The study aimed at examining the use and use patern of each number on Nigeriana and proposing ways of ensuring their current application. Opinion of 150 randomly selected publishers was surveyed through questionnaire and interview. 800 monographs and 200senals were examined. Mode and percentages were computed.  National Library controlled application of the numbers. Most publishers applied valid numbers correctly on title page and front cover for ISBN and ISSN respectively. Few printers erroneously applied them, Promotion was, by advertisements and workshops by National Library. National Agency should intensify its technical advice and assistance while publishers should make their publications and invalid numbers known.
